Battle of Midway

For the 2012 History Fair, I chose The Battle of Midway as my topic. The reason I selected this topic was because I was intrigued by why this battle supposedly turned the tide against the Japanese in World War II. In addition, I had always been fascinated by battle tactics and strategies used in war. The battle would also enrich my knowledge of history as well as my understanding of what happened back during World War II. When you combine these reasons together, you would understand why I would pick The Battle of Midway for the History Fair.
Because The Battle of Midway is very famous, there were plenty of books on it and websites dedicated to it. I didn’t want to get overwhelmed, so I limited myself to reading books on it, and later, looking at the websites. All the books were well-detailed and ones such as “The Shattered Sword” were simply amazing. It showed me a different perspective on the battle and challenges the common Western view. The websites were also informative, and most of my primary sources came from the internet. Letters documenting the buildup of forces and interrogation of prisoners could be found. One of the best sites was www.navy.mil.
Having gathered all my information by then, I looked for a way to present my topic. I am absolutely a horrible performer so a performance was out of question. I had no clue how to make a documentary so that was scrapped too. Down to exhibit and website, I realized that a website would be the best way to display my presentation. There could be no limit on the amount of information so I could type as much as I want. To display my information, I decided to split it up into parts. The final parts that made the cut were: The Prelude, The Battle, The Aftermath, People Involved, and a Photo Gallery. Anymore I felt I might overwhelm the reader with too much trivia. The end result was very satisfying and I now had the skeleton for my project.
The NHD theme this year is “Turning Points in History: People, Ideas, Events”. The Battle of Midway fits this theme perfectly because it is widely considered the turning point in the Pacific campaign for the Americans by many well respected professors. Heavy outnumbered Americans defeated the Imperial Japanese Navy, perhaps the greatest fleet to ever sail the oceans. Without this battle, the war would have lasted much longer as the Japanese Fleet would still dominate the oceans and continued to stop U.S advances by sea.
